New electric vehicle stratups can’t avoid comparisons to Tesla. Elon Musk’s automaker is the only one selling EVs en masse today, and remarkably, it’s done it chiefly making sedans, when trucks and SUVs are the most popular vehicles in the US. That’s what makes Rivian Automotive’s launches at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week so interesting. It’s unveiling an electric pickup and SUV, which it’s calling adventure vehicles, designed to grab a chunk out of high-profit margin truck sales sales for Big Three.
