Ports of LA, Long Beach to Fine Firms Over Container Backlog

October 26, 2021

Category:

The adjacent Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are implementing a container storage surcharge program that will increase based on the number of days a unit sits in one of the facilities, a move intended to clear growing backlogs of containers.

Under the new policy, which was scheduled to take effect Nov. 1, the ports will charge ocean carriers for each container that falls into one of two categories. For containers scheduled to move by truck, ocean carriers will be charged for every container sitting nine days or more. For containers moving by rail, ocean carriers will be charged for containers that have dwelled for six days or more.
