Charlotte approves $94M streetcar construction contract

The Charlotte Observer reports that the City Council approved a $94.1 million construction contract for the second phase of the Charlotte Area Transit System’s streetcar, which will allow work to begin in 2017. The city expects the project to be finished by summer of 2020.

The city had hoped to award the contract earlier this year, but the two bids received exceeded the city’s budget for construction work — one by more than 30% and one by nearly 40% — before the city found a firm, Johnson Bros. Construction, that could meet its budget.
