New report puts a dollar figure on carbon price needed to decarbonise shipping

Closing the Gap is the title of a new report launched this week by the Getting to Zero Coalition, outlining policy measures that could close the competitiveness gap between fossil fuels and zero-emission alternatives in shipping as well as enable an equitable transition. The report has been prepared by UMAS for the Getting to Zero Coalition – a partnership between the Global Maritime Forum, Friends of Ocean Action, and the World Economic Forum.

For international shipping to decarbonise, zero-emission fuels need to become the dominant fuel source by the 2040s, the report points out. However, there is an urgent need for the development of policies that can close the competitiveness gap and accelerate the maritime zero-emission trajectory.
