Termination day for California’s high-speed rail money

DEADLINE DAY: Today’s the day FRA said it will terminate an agreement with California, paving the way to cancel nearly a billion dollars in funding for the state’s high-speed rail project. What exactly will happen today (and what it means going forward) is not totally clear. FRA and DOT did not respond to questions about their next moves, including how quickly the administration plans to de-obligate the $929 million appropriated for the project in 2009, or how they plan to approach the stated goal of getting back $2.5 billion already sent to (and spent by) California.
