California, feds gear up for rail money fight

CALIFORNIA FEUDIN’: The acrimony over the state’s scaled-back high-speed rail project isn’t ending anytime soon, so your host teamed up with POLITICO California’s Jeremy White and Debra Kahn to break it all down. In short: There are two pots of federal funds the project received, and the Trump administration seems intent on trying to get both back. One grant, $929 million appropriated in 2010, has yet to be transferred to California, so the administration probably has a good chance of keeping that money. The other, $2.5 billion that was part of the Obama stimulus package in 2009, has already been paid to (and spent by) California, so repayment is a much tougher ask.
