Automakers try to return attention to NAFTA talks

A coalition of North American auto groups — including Alliance for Automobile Manufacturers and Association of Global Automakers — issued a statement Monday calling for the U.S., Canada and Mexico to resume NAFTA negotiations now that Mexico’s presidential election is over, Pro Trade’s Doug Palmer reports. “We have a great opportunity to update this trade agreement and it is in the best interest of all three countries to refocus on establishing a new NAFTA agreement that will allow the North American auto industry to remain globally competitive,” the group said. As Doug writes, the nearly yearlong effort to renegotiate NAFTA “slowed to a standstill” as the July 1 election in Mexico neared.
