Today at 5 p.m. marks the initial deadline for airlines to apply for federal grants that must go toward paying their employees. Carriers that apply afterward “may not receive approval as quickly,” according to the Treasury Department. Secretary Steven Mnuchin is required to start issuing grants early next week.
On Thursday, Southwest Airlines said it plans to apply. “We still don’t know the severity of this situation. We don’t know how long it will last,” CEO Gary Kelly said.
